Mackinac Island, an island located in Lake Huron in the state of Michigan, was named Mishimikinaak in Ojibwe by the Anishinaabe. The British constructed a fort there during the Revolutionary War and the island became a part of the US in 1815.
These days, Mackinac Island is home to 584 year-round residents, bans motor vehicles (except for emergency vehicles) and in 2022, was named by Travel and Leisure ‘The Best Island in the Continental US to Visit.’
One reason for that is Mackinac Island Fudge. There are over 5 tons of fudge produced every day at the height of tourist season on this island, The Fudge Capital of the World!
In the 1800s, Rome Murdick opened a candy shop, where he would pour the warm fudge onto marble slabs to cool as he used a trowel to shape it in front of a window so that customers could watch. Other shops opened and would compete for customers with the best showmanship and by wafting the smell of fudge and vanilla out to the street using fans.

What is Mackinac Island’s biggest export?
—
Mackinac Island is iconic for its Victorian houses, horse drawn carts and bicycles. But what really makes the island tick, drives its economy and has secured its place in Michigan tourism, is the fudge.
—
This island, with only 500 residents, is home to more than a dozen fudge shops ready to serve the 1 million annual visitors. On peak summer tourist days, visitors collectively buy over 10,000 pounds of fudge per day. To keep up with this intense demand, the island imports 10 tons of sugar and 1 ton of butter every week.

We went to Michigan for a few days and I brought back dried cherries, chocolate covered cherries and some fudge from Mackinac Island.
Of course I had to dress up my goodie bags before I delivered them.

SOME COMMENTS FROM THE MACKINAC ISLAND PAGE ON FACEBOOK

This is one of the best…highly recommend…

I stayed in the Lighthouse Suite at the very top of the Hotel. It was the most amazing place to view everything! Everything is just first class at the Iroquois. The sheets are beautiful, the sitting room was just lovely. I have never stayed at The Grand, but my choice is The Iroquois! Wonderful memories! A MUST stay place for everyone!

I had my 40th birthday on the island and stayed at the Iroquois. The best! The room with all the windows is wonderful; perfect location for access to Main St. and a bit out of the crowds.

We enjoy sitting outside with a beverage watching the ships go by.

The rooms are lovely, views are perfect, staff is very accommodating… our favorite place in the whole world… We have stayed at least 15 times and wouldn’t think of staying anywhere else! Try a “boxed lunch” for your bike ride around the island :o)

Our family loves the Iroquois!! Our son worked at the Iroquois for 2 summers. Our favorite room is the Lighthouse Suite. It has the most beautiful views I had ever seen. We will stay there any this year I LOVE the Iroquois…and the island.

The hotel is amazing, staff is wonderful, The Carriage House is FABULOUS! Breakfast on the veranda every morning was our favorite memory…

My Husband, and I Love the Iroquois! I love the decor, the location, everything!!! We have GREAT memories from there!

This is the hotel where Joe and I spent our honeymoon, in 1976! We had a corner room, with a wonderful view of the Mackinac Bridge. It was very beautiful, and we have many, many fond memories of that time in our lives.
