On the way to Mackinac Island, the ferry took us closer to Big Mac, and we rode in under it! What an amazing feeling!
What is Mackinac Island’s biggest export?
Mackinac Island is iconic for its Victorian houses, horse drawn carts and bicycles. But what really makes the island tick, drives its economy and has secured its place in Michigan tourism, is the fudge.
This island, with only 500 residents, is home to more than a dozen fudge shops ready to serve the 1 million annual visitors. On peak summer tourist days, visitors collectively buy over 10,000 pounds of fudge per day. To keep up with this intense demand, the island imports 10 tons of sugar and 1 ton of butter every week.

Eating a lot of fudge while spending the weekend ...
Eating a lot of fudge while spending the weekend on Mackinac Island was inevitable, so I tried to make it into a learning experience by comparing the different types while I was at it. Overall Murdick’s fudge has a more mature and complex flavor and texture, while Ryba’s and Joann’s have softer fudge with a simpler, but still delicious, flavor. Here’s the breakdown:
~ rybasfudge is the softest and smoothest. All three flavors, chocolate peanut butter, plain chocolate, and sea salt caramel were delicious, with the sea salt caramel being the favorite in my family because of the nice balance between salty and sweet. I enjoyed the chocolate peanut butter, but if you don’t love the peanut butter flavor or want a lighter fudge, I would suggest getting a different flavor since the peanut butter mixed with the already very sweet fudge might be too rich for some people’s taste.
~ joannsfudge is still soft, but, at least in the double dark chocolate that I tried, has a slightly grainer texture. The double dark chocolate had a less sweet flavor than the regular chocolate, which is good if you don’t like things that are too sweet.
~ originalmurdicks has the biggest texture difference. It has a grainier texture, which some people thought made it better than other kinds that were smoother, and is firmer, as you can see in the video. The plain chocolate also had a more caramelly flavor.
The 2019 Mackinac Island Fudge Festival is in full swing! Stop in one of the amazing fudge shops on Mackinac Island and celebrate fudge!🖤😋

My dad absolutely loved drinking coffee and every now and then I would spoil him with a cappuccino when I was free during the hectic summer months. Before he passed, it was pretty obvious to combine our famous family fudge recipe and my most popular flavored brew, Love Potion #9 together. It has become a favorite for both candy and coffee lovers alike. Available again this season at the shops and online! .

My family business, mayscandyshop - is now open for orders! And we’re starting out the season with some Love Potion fudge, a coffee chocolate fudge infused with hazelnut and cinnamon flavors, courtesy of coffee from luckybean.mi - a true labor of love ☕️💙 #mymackinac #makeitmackinac #mackinacislandfudge #sweettooth #fudgie...
Fresh off the plein air easel of Grand Hotel. “Grand Hotel Blue Ceiling.” Capturing the color off this ceiling fascinates me! In person that part of the painting glows with the relatively neutral colors surrounding it. It is that color to fool the birds into thinking it is the sky so they don’t nest there. While I was painting I heard a guy tell someone it was to fool spiders... I’m not sure if that is true!?🤣
Available through Mackinacs’s Little Gallery. Dm me with questions.

So, it stopped raining here in Mackinaw, MI, so we took a day trip over to Mackinac Island to take in some of the sites and do a little shopping.
We rode Sheplers Ferry over, along with Jasper and our bikes.
Once there, we rode the lakeshore trail around the island to wear the dog out a bit.
Then we headed downtown to stroll down the strip.
We ended up getting a few souvenirs, coffee, and some fudge, of course!
On the way back, the water was a little choppy, and Jasper was stressed out. No sealegs yet! He was happy to be back on shore! 🐶...
Traveling to Mackinac Island which sits between ...
Traveling to Mackinac Island which sits between Michigan and its “Upper Peninsula” is like traveling back in time: no cars or mechanized transport are allowed on shore, it’s main harbor is filled with sail boats including those arriving on the annual Chicago Yacht Club Race, and its cobble stone streets are dotted with white picket fences, Victorian painted ladies and old timey fudge shops. And yet still, despite all these anachronistic embellishments of a bygone era, the island is still more progressive on issues of structural racism than Founders Brewing. Cheers!

#MackinacIsland is a beautiful place that definitely lives up to all the hype. It’s one of Michigan’s top tourist draws, and for good reason. Visiting this lovely island, just a 20 minute ferry ride from the mainland, is like stepping back in time. Cars were banned on #Mackinac in 1898 and haven’t been allowed since, so island life revolves around horses and bicycles. #VictorianArchitecture predominates as well, making for incredible scenery at every turn. I truly loved it there. #MyMackinac #MackinacIslandLife #MackinacIsle #PureMichigan

This is one of the best…highly recommend…
I stayed in the Lighthouse Suite at the very top of the Hotel. It was the most amazing place to view everything! Everything is just first class at the Iroquois. The sheets are beautiful, the sitting room was just lovely. I have never stayed at The Grand, but my choice is The Iroquois! Wonderful memories! A MUST stay place for everyone!
I had my 40th birthday on the island and stayed at the Iroquois. The best! The room with all the windows is wonderful; perfect location for access to Main St. and a bit out of the crowds.
We enjoy sitting outside with a beverage watching the ships go by.
The rooms are lovely, views are perfect, staff is very accommodating… our favorite place in the whole world… We have stayed at least 15 times and wouldn’t think of staying anywhere else! Try a “boxed lunch” for your bike ride around the island :o)
Our family loves the Iroquois!! Our son worked at the Iroquois for 2 summers. Our favorite room is the Lighthouse Suite. It has the most beautiful views I had ever seen. We will stay there any this year I LOVE the Iroquois…and the island.
The hotel is amazing, staff is wonderful, The Carriage House is FABULOUS! Breakfast on the veranda every morning was our favorite memory…
My Husband, and I Love the Iroquois! I love the decor, the location, everything!!! We have GREAT memories from there!
This is the hotel where Joe and I spent our honeymoon, in 1976! We had a corner room, with a wonderful view of the Mackinac Bridge. It was very beautiful, and we have many, many fond memories of that time in our lives.
